Hafez Makhlouf and Tales of the Jinn in Jabal Amel

“Like Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim!”
In Jabal Amel, this saying is used instead of explicitly mentioning the jinn, as a way to ward off their presence and protect against their harm. The belief in the existence and influence of the jinn is deeply rooted in the collective memory of the region’s people.

When asked about the origins of this saying and the depth of belief in the jinn in Jabal Amel, historian Kassem Hejeij explained:
“The people of Jabal Amel believe in the existence of jinn, as they are mentioned in the Quran, particularly in Surah Al-Jinn. However, scholars and religious authorities emphasize that jinn cannot interfere in or control our world, based on Quranic verses, prophetic traditions, and narrations from the Ahl al-Bayt. In local folklore, people avoid mentioning the jinn by name, instead using the Basmala to prevent their presence and ward off harm, as it’s believed that mentioning them can summon them.”

Hejeij added:
“There are many stories about jinn in Jabal Amel. One famous tale is about Sayyed Muhammad Al-Amin, who reportedly became extraordinarily wealthy after marrying a jinni from the village of Sowana. In Shakra, a rocky hill known as ‘Al-Arid’ or ‘The Jinn’s Hill’ is said to be inhabited by ‘Al-Ayyatat,’ evil female jinn who scream continuously.

The late Asaad Khalil from Shakra once recounted passing by Al-Arid and hearing a woman call his name. He ignored her, knowing that responding to ‘Al-Ayyata’ could lead to possession or the loss of a loved one.

On the other hand, stories also speak of benevolent jinn, such as peaceful jinn who appear under the full moon or ‘La Masas,’ harmless child jinn who play with children. However, the ‘Afarit’ (demonic jinn) are the most dangerous. If they appear or possess someone, they can cause illness, mental distress, or force the person to commit evil acts.”
