Persistence in Jabal Amel

The proverb “Milk and six hundred times milk” describes someone who stubbornly insists on their opinion or stance, despite opposition or pressure to change.

“The Origin and Story Behind the Proverb”
Historian Kassem Hojeij explained:
“This proverb signifies unwavering determination.

It is said that Abdullah Qassem from the village of Houla, a respected teacher and community leader, lived under his assertive wife’s dominance.

One day, she cooked mujaddara (a popular lentil and bulgur dish) but didn’t serve yogurt with it.

When Abdullah questioned her, she firmly refused, sparking his insistence as he declared:
‘It needs milk, and six hundred times milk!’

He stormed outside, repeating his claim loudly, amusing the neighbors, while his wife angrily shouted threats from inside.”

“Stubbornness: A Trait of Jabal Amel’s People”
Hojeij added:
“Stubbornness is a defining trait of Jabal Amel’s people, rooted in their deep faith and resilience.

This trait manifests in their steadfast commitment to truth and their unwillingness to compromise, regardless of the challenges.

The phrase ‘Milk and six hundred times milk’ symbolizes this perseverance and dedication to upholding what they believe is right.”
